 Background and Objective: Sleep disorders are the common problems in colorectal cancer patients. The present study was conducted with the aim of determining the effect of Benson’s Relaxation Response on the patients with colorectal cancer.
Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted using convenience sampling. The samples consisted of 56 colorectal cancer patients, 28 per group, visiting Shahid Mostafa Khomeini Hospital in Ilam city (2022). After random allocation, the control group received routine treatments and the intervention group received Benson's relaxation in addition to routine treatments for 30 days (2 times a day and 15-20 minutes each time). The data were collected through a demographic information form and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) (1998), and analyzed using Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon, and Chi-square tests in SPSS20 software, with a significant level of 0.05.
Findings: The average sleep quality scores between the intervention and control groups before and after the intervention, was respectively (15.29 ± 1.863, 3.93 ± 2.721, 16.93 ± 1.961, 16.99 ± 1.789). Before the intervention, the scores were not statistically significant (P>0.05), but after the implementation of the intervention, this difference became significant, so that in the intervention group, the quality of sleep and its dimensions (except for the use of sleeping pills) improved. (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Benson’s Relaxation Response was found to improve sleep quality in colorectal cancer patients. It is recommended that this method be performed by nurses.
