Introduction: Low support for women who have just given birth can reduce their quality of life. Distance counseling of fathers has a low cost and is available. The present study was designed with the aim of investigating the effect of remote counseling of fathers on the quality of life and social support of their new-born wives.
Methods: This clinical trial was conducted in all comprehensive health centers of Qazvin city for five months from March 1400 to July 1401. In addition to the usual consultations during pregnancy and after delivery, the intervention group received individual advice from fathers on the virtual network and the follow-ups were completed on the 3rd, 10th and 30th days after delivery.
Findings: Spouse's social support in the postpartum period was significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group in all follow-ups. The effect size of the intervention was strong based on the standardized mean difference during all three follow-up times (0.62, 0.74 and 0.72 on days 3, 10 and 30 after delivery, respectively). Maternal quality of life scores in the postpartum period in both groups increased over time, and the average quality of life in the intervention group was significantly higher than the control in all follow-up measurements.
Conclusion: Distance counseling of fathers is an effective way to increase the amount of support for the wife and the quality of life after childbirth.
