Background and Objective: Hemodialysis is the most common treatment for chronic kidney disease. During this procedure, patients experience considerable pain due to repeated cannulation. In recent years, non-pharmacological approaches have gained attention as low-risk and effective interventions for pain reduction in these patients. This study aimed to compare the effects of lavender essential oil inhalation and music therapy on the intensity of arteriovenous fistula cannulation–related pain in hemodialysis patients.
Materials and Methods: This single-blind, randomized clinical trial was conducted among 95 patients at three hemodialysis centers affiliated with Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. Participants were allocated to three groups—lavender inhalation, music therapy, and control—using block randomization. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire and a Visual Analog Scale for pain assessment. Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS software (version 26).
Results: No significant difference was observed in the mean pain scores among the three groups before the intervention (P = 0.5). Following the intervention, a significant difference was observed between the control group and the two intervention groups (P = 0.006), while no significant difference was found between the two intervention methods. The mean pain scores in the intervention groups decreased significantly after the intervention (P = 0.001), whereas no significant change was observed in the control group (P = 0.6).
Conclusion: The findings of this study confirmed the effectiveness of the investigated interventions, consistent with most prior research demonstrating the beneficial effects of non-pharmacological approaches. Accordingly, incorporation of these methods into pain management protocols should be considered.
