Introduction: Surgical and anesthetic drugs based on innovation and new ways have improved the care of patients. But despite these ways, complications after anesthesia and surgery are still there. This study carried out to evaluate the effect of lavender odor on postoperative nausea and vomiting after abdominal hernia surgery.

Methods: In this clinical trial study 110 patients with abdominal hernia surgery were selected and after explaining the purpose of study and obtaining informed consent, randomized in experimental (55 patients) and control (55 patients) group. For each of sample in the case group, oxygen was administered 6 LPM by face mask for 20 minutes in combination with lavender odor. In control group oxygen container containing pure distilled water. Immediately after leaving the recovery, 2, 6 and 24 hours after intervention, nausea and vomiting of each sample were measured by visual analogue scale. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 19.

Finding: The mean of nausea severity in all measured times in the control group was more than experimental group. In both experimental and control groups the severity of nausea decreased over measuring times. Repeated measures ANOVA showed significant different in the severity of nausea between experimental and control groups and in all measured times the severity of nausea in experimental group was less than control group. Independent Samples t-Test revealed significant differences in the frequency of vomiting after surgery between two groups.

Conclusion: According to the results use of inhaling the lavender odor to reduce nausea and vomiting after abdominal hernia surgery, is recommended.
