Background and Objective: Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease of the central nervous system that threatens an individual's independence and ability and affects all aspects of the patient's life. The Orem Self-Care Model is a suitable clinical guide for this patient to plan and implement self-care principles. This study aimed to systematically review the application of Orem's self-care model in patients with multiple sclerosis in Iran.
Materials and Methods: This systematic review was conducted on articles published between 2009 and 2023, identified through searches of domestic and international databases, including Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, CINAHL, SID, Magiran, and Iran Doc. Keywords used included self-care, Orem's theory, multiple sclerosis, and Model/Theory/Framework self-care. Inclusion criteria included original research studies in Iran and access to the full text of the article without time limits. After qualitative assessment with CONSORT and STROBE checklists, studies were reviewed, and the desired data were extracted.
Results: Out of 309 studies identified, 16 eligible articles were included in the systematic review, which included clinical trials and quasi-experimental studies. The studies' results showed the effects of the Orem model on quality of life, caregiver distress, balance and motor function, disease-related problems, anxiety, stress, sleep quality, fatigue, hope, self-esteem, and activities of daily living in clients with multiple sclerosis in Iran.
Conclusion: Orem's self-care model is among the nursing models that have received much attention from researchers in Iran. The results of this evidence-based study can serve as a guide for applying Orem's self-care model to address the numerous problems faced by multiple sclerosis patients in Iran.
