Background and Objective: One of the common problems colon cancer patients face is sleep disorder. The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of Benson's Relaxation Response in these patients.
Materials and Methods: This semi-experimental study was carried out using the available sampling method in 2022 on 56 people (28 people in each group) of colon cancer patients in Shahid Mostafa Khomeini Hospital (RA) in Ilam city. After random allocation, the control group received routine treatments, while the intervention group received Benson's Relaxation Response technique in addition to routine treatments for 30 days (twice a day and 15-20 minutes each time). The data collection tools were a demographic information form and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics (Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon, and Chi-Square) in SPSS20 software.
Results: The mean scores of sleep quality between the intervention and control groups before and after the intervention were 15.29±1.863, 3.93±2.721, 16.93±1.961, 16.99±1.789, respectively. Before the intervention, the scores were not statistically significant (P>0.05); however, after the implementation of the intervention, this difference became significant. As a result, the quality of sleep and its dimensions (except for the use of sleeping pills) improved the intervention group (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Benson's Relaxation Technique was effective in improving the sleep quality of these patients. It is recommended that nurses adopt this method.
