Background and Objective: Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in children, which, in addition to behavioral problems in children, causes significant psychological stress for mothers. Therefore, designing supportive interventions to improve the mental health of this vulnerable group is highly important. Thus, the present study was conducted to determine the effect of spiritual care training on the spiritual health of mothers of children with ADHD.
Materials and Methods: This pre-test-post-test experimental study was conducted with one experimental and one control group among 60 mothers referred to Ayatollah Taleghani Hospital in Gorgan. Participants were selected by convenience sampling and randomly assigned to two groups of 30. The experimental group participated in six 45-minute sessions of spiritual care training based on the model of Richards and Bergin (2005). The control group received routine care. Data were collected using the Demographic and Spiritual Health Questionnaire developed by Palotzin and Ellison (1982), which was completed before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance and between-subject effects.
Results: The average spiritual health scores in the test group were (before: 75.30 ± 8.956; while after: 100.43 ± 8.353), and in the control group were (before: 76.83 ± 9.075; while after: 78.73 ± 9.674). The results showed that spiritual care training significantly improved the total spiritual health score and its dimensions in the experimental group compared to the control group (P=0.001).
Conclusion: Spiritual care training can effectively improve the spiritual health of mothers of children with ADHD. Therefore, integrating this approach into specialized support and educational services for these mothers has great potential to improve their quality of life and ability to adapt.
